Default Settings, Hyphenation: How to enable hyphenation
- Last updated on February 16, 2021 at 7:29 PM
Hyphenation in word automatically divides words grammatically correct at the end of the line of text. This is often used in text, which is formatted as 'justified' to prevent huge gaps at the end of the line.
The hyphenation setting is influenced by two options in Word. One is the default setting for hyphenation which is defining the default hyphenation behavior for the whole document. The second is a setting in a paragraph style which overwrites the default setting of the document.
Default hyphenation
The default hyphenation is set in the 'Layout' ribbon. In the 'Page Setup' Group is the Hyphenation menu. If you set the hyphenation to automatic, word will divide the long words at the end of the line automatically.
Hyphenation setting in paragraph styles
In some cases you won't want to use the automatic hyphenation (i.E. the Heading styles). In these cases you can deactivate the hyphenation for that specific style. For this go to the paragraph menu of the style. In the register 'Line and Page Breaks' activate the option don't hyphenate.
